The goal of the Topology Optimizer product is to support grid operators to manage complex network situations through cost efficient topological actions that reduce the need for redispatch. 

The topology optimizer solution maximizes operational flexibility while minimizing redispatch costs. To achieve this, the Topology Optimizer is seamlessly integrated into the landscape of existing tools:  

first, it generates an optimized grid topology; second, it applies redispatch optimization on top of that result.

The technology behind it

The Topology Optimizer is a GPU native optimizer that uses massive parallel algorithms, including brute force methods combined with heuristic ranking. It integrates seamlessly into the MCCS architecture, enabling fast and scalable optimization even for complex grid models. 

How does it work 

The optimization follows a clear three step process: 

  1. Import grid models 
    Load standard grid files in UCT and CGMES. 
  2. Optimize the grid topology 
    Run GPU based DC optimization with subsequent AC validation. 
  3. Review and simulate actions 
    Operators analyze the proposed switching actions and test them using simulation mode before implementation. 

Visual

The Topology Optimizer supports operators in evaluating and understanding optimisation outcomes. It enables the comparison of different optimisation strategies to address congestions while highlighting the top five critical branches. In addition, it offers visualisations of the results in a single line diagrams and shows load flow results before and after optimisation.
