On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, The Global Power System Transformation Consortium (GPST) and the 50Hertz MCCS program invites grid operators, researchers, and technology partners to an update session on the Control Room Of The Future Implementation Council. The event presents highlights from newly released MCCS modules and discusses cutting-edge research priorities from GPST and the global system operations community (including Elia Group).

Objective of the session is to further bridge the gap between research and industrialization. Therefore, the session highlights operational value, real-world applicability, and the transition of advanced research into scalable, production-ready solutions.

MCCS Module Updates: From Control Center to Open Operational Contexts

The session opens with the release of a new MCCS module. Focusing on Volt Control, complemented by the latest functional and performance updates to the Topology Optimizer. Together, these modules demonstrate how MCCS solutions support voltage stability and grid topology decisions beyond traditional operational boundaries. This part shows how modular design enables faster deployment, broader accessibility, and seamless integration into diverse operational contexts.

Live Demonstrations: Operational Use in Practice

The session offers an Outage Planning 2.0 live demonstration and illustrates how MCCS supports planners in managing complexity, reducing coordination effort, and increasing transparency across outage scenarios.

Afterwards, the Permit Management live demonstration shows how digital permit workflows improve safety, traceability, and operational efficiency in daily grid operations.

Research Challenges and Global Exchange

An update on the GPST/ Elia Group/Energinet Research Challenges, highlighting where applied research directly supports operational needs. Participants also receive an update on the Global System Operations Summit 2026, including key themes and outcomes relevant to system operators facing increasing dynamics and uncertainty.

Essential Metrics for Real-Time Dynamic Assessment

This section focuses on which system metrics matter in real time and why they are critical for secure operation under high shares of power electronics and renewables.

The discussion covers:

  • System strength and its operational relevance
  • Inertia and Rate of Change of Frequency (RoCoF)
  • Dynamic response tracking of grid-connected equipment
  • Damping ratios for electromechanical oscillations
