Global System Operations Summit 2026: Ensuring Grid Stability for Tomorrow
300 experts, more than 25 countries and one shared goal: shaping the future of secure and resilient power system operations.
Date: 17 - 18 September 2026
Location: Central Berlin, Germany
On 17 and 18 September 2026, Berlin became an international meeting point for the future of system operations. Hosted by 50Hertz, the Global System Operations Summit brought together 300 experts from more than 25 countries to exchange experiences, share best practices and discuss practical responses to key challenges in grid and system operations.
Guided by the principle “By system operators, for system operators”, the Summit connected experts from transmission and distribution system operators, research institutions, regulatory bodies and technology organisations. Participants and speakers travelled to Berlin from across Europe and other parts of the world, bringing a wide range of operational experience and perspectives to the discussions.
Under the theme “Ensuring Grid Stability for Tomorrow”, keynote speeches, technical sessions, practical case studies, poster sessions and interactive discussions explored the digital transformation of system operations, system security and market design, real-time operations with high shares of inverter-based resources, and the continued development of the Control Room of the Future.
The Summit was organised in cooperation with the Global Power System Transformation Consortium (GPST) and the Energy Systems Integration Group (ESIG). These partnerships strengthened the connection between operational practice, international research and the development of scalable solutions for secure, resilient and sustainable power systems.
Cross-operator collaboration was also reflected in the Topology Optimizer Symposium, hosted by the German transmission system operators as part of the Summit programme. The symposium created a dedicated forum for exchanging experience on topology optimisation, congestion management and the use of cost-efficient topological measures to increase operational flexibility and reduce the need for redispatch.
In addition, several satellite events were held at the 50Hertz Netzquartier, where participants worked together to produce tangible results.
At the Grid x Markets Fusion Lab, 30 participants from eleven European institutions, including transmission system operators and universities, competed in a hackathon. Their objective was to identify links between market behaviour, fundamental data and extreme system events across different European regions.
The launch of a new Elia Group Research Challenge on system operations was also marked by a kick-off event. Nineteen institutes and organisations from seven countries took part in the session. Topic Leads from 50Hertz and Elia Transmission Belgium presented the research questions for Research Challenge 2.0, which were subsequently explored in greater depth with participants during the poster sessions.
The Summit concluded the Berlin Grid Transformation Week, organised by 50Hertz together with LF Energy. By connecting the LF Energy Summit Europe, MCCS Checkpoint 26 and the Global System Operations Summit, the partners created a focused week covering open-source solutions, digital infrastructure, MCCS and the future of system operations.
The conversations and connections established in Berlin now provide a strong basis for continued international cooperation, applied research and the exchange of operational practices across organisations and countries.
