LogBook

The LogBook is a centralized and unified product for the storage, indexing, and retrieval of business-relevant events and log information across MCCS products. As part of the GrASP Platform, it provides a shared and trusted foundation for operational transparency, traceability, compliance, and auditability.

As modern grid control systems become increasingly distributed and data-driven, organizations need a solution that enables them to understand what happened in the system, why it happened, and how decisions were made. The LogBook addresses this need by providing a secure, standardized, and scalable logging platform that eliminates fragmented and inconsistent logging approaches across products and Understand and prove what happened - across systems, users, files, and decisions.

Use case

Whenever operational activities, user actions, or business events need to be recorded and analyzed, the LogBook serves as the central source of truth. System operators use it to monitor operational activities and understand system behavior in real time. During incident investigations, historical records can be queried to identify root causes and reconstruct the sequence of events that led to a specific outcome.

The platform also supports compliance and audit processes by providing immutable and traceable records that can be reviewed long after an event occurred. Beyond operational use, the LogBook facilitates cross-team collaboration by providing a consistent view of shared operational data and enables historical replay of previous system states for validation, analysis, and troubleshooting.

Benefit

By providing a common logging platform, the LogBook eliminates the need for MCCS product teams to develop and maintain their own logging solutions.

The result is improved operational transparency, full traceability of business-relevant events, and a consistent approach to audit and compliance requirements. Teams gain access to a unified and searchable repository of information, reducing the effort required to correlate data across multiple systems.

This shared approach lowers operational complexity, reduces development effort, and allows teams to focus on business functionality rather than building custom logging infrastructure. At the same time, centralized governance helps ensure consistent data quality and retention policies across the entire platform ecosystem.

The technology behind it

Architecturally, the LogBook is designed as a modular and scalable logging platform that integrates seamlessly into the GrASP ecosystem.

The solution combines specialized services for registration, ingestion, storage, indexing, querying, notifications, and visualization. OpenSearch serves as the core storage and indexing technology, providing scalable document management and high-performance search capabilities. PostgreSQL is used to manage registration information, metadata, and schema definitions.

Supporting components such as the Registration Component, Importer Component, Query Component, Replicator Component, Notification Component, and UI Component work together to provide a complete end-to-end logging platform. Operational management and deployment are supported through the GrASP LogBook Operator running in Kubernetes environments.

How does it work?

The process begins with the registration of document types and metadata that define which information can be stored within the platform. Once registered, business events, documents, and log entries are submitted through the ingestion interfaces, where they are validated and processed before being stored.

After ingestion, the data is indexed within OpenSearch, making it available for fast retrieval through full-text search, filtering, tagging, categorization, and time-based queries. Users can access this information through a configurable user interface that supports visualization, analysis, and export capabilities.

Additional components enhance the platform's functionality. The Replicator can distribute data to multiple indexes, while the Notification Component can generate event-driven alerts whenever predefined conditions are met. Combined with configurable retention policies, security controls, and high-availability operation, the LogBook ensures that business-relevant events remain accessible, traceable, and audit-ready throughout their entire lifecycle.
